During the lifetime of a vessel, various circumstances may arise that require a technical survey in order to certify the boat’s good condition, determine the extent and value of any necessary repairs, and/or obtain an official document to be submitted to a relevant authority.

In the pre-owned market in particular, a technical assessment plays a fundamental role during the buying and selling process. Knowing the overall condition of a vessel helps minimize the risks associated with a purchase.

To properly evaluate the vessel’s condition, a sea trial is recommended. During the sea trial, it is possible to analyze the efficiency and operating parameters of the propulsion system and transmission systems. These analyses verify the correct functioning of the engine and onboard instruments and are carried out using specific electronic diagnostic equipment. This instrumentation allows connection to the engine’s control units and/or electronic control modules—devices that manage next-generation engines through a network of sensors that control fuel injection, ignition, and distribution systems.

Following the assessment and inspection of a used vessel, a detailed report must be prepared describing its features and condition, including any defects or anomalies detected. The surveyor’s opinion should include a visual inspection of all external parts of the hull, deck, interior spaces, and equipment. Checks must also be carried out for possible water infiltration, metal corrosion, and any damage to fiberglass, wood, or steel structures.

The survey is therefore an essential tool and must contain clear, accurate, and accessible information. This technical document provides a true picture of the vessel’s condition, enabling the buyer—during negotiations—to submit a counteroffer that takes into account the costs of any required repairs.
